Humble Beginnings
Shahid Khan was born on July 18, 1950, in Lahore, Pakistan. Raised in a middle‑class family, his father owned a small shop while his mother taught mathematics. At just 16 years old, Khan moved to the United States with only $500 in his pocket and a dream of building a better life.
His first job was washing dishes for $1.20 an hour while studying at the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, where he later graduated in Industrial Engineering (1971).
Building Flex‑N‑Gate
Khan’s career began at Flex‑N‑Gate, an auto parts company. In 1978, he took a bold step by starting Bumper Works with $16,000 in savings and a $50,000 loan. His breakthrough came with the invention of the one‑piece truck bumper, which revolutionized the auto industry.
By 1980, Khan purchased Flex‑N‑Gate and transformed it into a global powerhouse. Today, the company operates 76 plants worldwide and employs over 27,000 people.
Entering the World of Sports
Shahid Khan’s ambitions didn’t stop at auto parts. In 2012, he purchased the Jacksonville Jaguars, becoming the first ethnic minority owner of an NFL team.
A year later, in 2013, he expanded into English football by buying Fulham F.C., a Premier League club. His son, Tony Khan, also partnered with him to launch All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2019, which quickly became a major competitor to WWE.
Expanding Beyond Sports
Khan’s empire includes luxury hospitality. He owns the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto and is developing a new Four Seasons property in Jacksonville, set to open in December 2026.
